We are seeking an experienced Biomedical Scientist who is enthusiastic, well-motivated, and able to motivate others for this post within the Microbiology Department at St. Mary’s Hospital on the beautiful Isle of Wight. Applicants must be registered with the HCPC, possess MSc or FIBMS and have extensive post registration experience at BMS level within an NHS medical microbiology laboratory. The post is full time (37.5 hrs per week) worked flexibly across 7 days without any on-call commitment.

This is an exciting opportunity for a dedicated and enthusiastic BMS to become involved in the organisation and supervision of the department. You will be involved in the monitoring, updating and improvement of existing methodology and will have specific responsibility for the training and development of staff of all grades within the department up to date knowledge, and demonstration of continuing professional development is essential.

You will join our professional and friendly accredited department, which is modern, progressive, well equipped and fully computerised (TelePath). The Department offers a broad range of laboratory experience by internal rotation throughout all sections of the laboratory including serology and Containment Level 3. Current laboratory instrumentation includes: bioMerieux BacT/Alert 3D Blood Culture System, bioMérieux VIDAS 30 Immunoanalyser, bioMerieux FilmArray PCR, Beckman Dxi and AU680 analysers.

The laboratory is situated in a purpose built complex within the low energy hospital and provides a comprehensive service to the hospital and General Practitioners on the Island. The Isle of Wight provides a superb location in which to work and live. The Island hosts events such as: Cowes week and several music festivals, with ample opportunity to participate in other events covering water-sports, walking and cycling throughout the year. It is a centre of excellence for sailing and many staff participate in this pass time. The area is mainly rural and there are excellent ferry and rail links with Portsmouth and Southampton.
