We are pleased to be offering an exciting opportunity for a Specialist Biomedical scientist to join our Microbiology team based at the Queens Medical Centre Campus.

Working for such a large Acute teaching hospital with regional specialities provides Biomedical Scientists scope to build confidence in all areas of Microbiology. This post provides Biomedical Scientists not only an opportunity to build on their Microbiology skills but in addition developing management skills to help with future progression.

Alongside using your detailed technical knowledge to provide high quality patient services you will also work closely with the senior team to ensure the smooth running of the laboratory through management and training of staff and take an active role in ensuring our quality agenda is centre to all we do.

You will rotate through all sections of the service including Bacteriology, Serology, Parasitology, Molecular microbiology, Virology and Mycology. Fixed rotation within our Bacteriology or Virology services would be considered based on experience.

Candidates must have:
• HCPC Registration as a Biomedical Scientist
• Completed the IBMS Specialist Portfolio in either Medical Microbiology or Virology (or CPSM state registration in a Microbiology Department)
• At least one years’ experience post IBMS specialist Portfolio in a diagnostic Microbiology Department.

Current laboratory instrumentation includes BD Bactec FX blood culture system, Sysmex UF1000 automated urine screeners, Mast UriPlus, Biomerieux Vitek 2 Compaq identification and sensitivity system, BD Viper, Liason, Biomerieux Easymag, ADVIA Centaur immunoanalyser, BD Max and Aus Diagnostics PCR platform.

The laboratory is approved by the IBMS as a training centre and has experience in producing both Registration and Specialist training for Biomedical Scientists. The department fully supports continuing professional development.

Current Working Hours
Monday to Friday 09:00 to 17:30
Saturday morning shifts 08:30 to 13:35 (1 in 4 rotation)
Sunday morning shifts 08:30 to 12:30 (frequency dependant on volunteers)

Within the next 12 months it is envisaged that the department will be extending its working hours to 8am to 8pm.
