The progressive Biochemistry department at UHSM and are seeking applications from experienced and enthusiastic HCPC registered biomedical scientists, with a passion for clinical excellence, quality and a drive for career development to work core hours within the specialist mass spectrometry section of the laboratory.

UHSM is a major acute university teaching hospital providing services to adults and children at Wythenshawe Hospital and Withington Community Hospital. We serve a population of approximately 600,000 and patients come from outside the Region to access tertiary services such as cardiothoracic surgery, burns, transplant and respiratory medicine.

As a progressive department, we currently provide a significant amount of specialist services to both clinical users and external laboratories and invest in staff development offering support and encouragement in CPD with the opportunity to attend approved seminars and external courses when available.

The laboratory is one of the largest single site Biochemistry labs in the UK and boasts a fully integrated, nationally and internationally renowned mass spectrometry section. Equipment includes Waters TQD, TQ-MS, and TQS MS systems with Water Acquity UPLC and Thermo QE FOCUS MS with Ultimate 3000 UPLC. The successful candidate will be required to assist the Senor BMS staff on the section in the training and development of the trainee BMSs and support staff, and also involvement in devising and maintaining protocols on the section in line with ISO 15189 such as reagent control, documentation, quality assurance, audit processes and general overall performance. There will also be opportunity for involvement in Clinical Trials and future method developments.

The department is also excellently equipped utilising the Abbott Inpeco fully automated tracking system with C16 Chemistry analysers, i2000 Immunoassay analysers, online decapping, aliquotting, sealing and storage and hosts large specialised sections for electrophoresis and point of care testing.

The successful candidate will not be required to participate in the single discipline 24/7 shift system however they may be asked to accommodate some shifts sessions if the service required.
Possession of the IBMS Specialist portfolio or substantial documented experience within the Biochemistry discipline and ideally mass spectrometry will be required for this Band 6 appointment. However other state registered applicants are encouraged to apply.The department has full HCPC training status and is fully accredited to ISO 15189 and CPA accredited to point of care testing.
