This role is based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital

The laboratory is located on Level minus 1 of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and provides a comprehensive pathology service to many Service Users including UHB Trust, Private Hospitals, General Practitioners and General Dental Practitioners. A specialist / expert referral service is also provided both to other hospitals around the West Midlands region and nationally.

We are looking to fill the post in Microbiology with an individual who is experienced, self-motivated and an excellent communicator. You must be HCPC registered, possess an an MSc in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent, FIBMS or Higher specialist Diploma, holding a Post Graduate management qualification.

Your responsibilities as Head BMS, would be to ensure the Department maintains high professional standards of practice and a high level of competence for all Health Care Scientists.

As Manager of the Department, you will ensure safe and efficient day to day delivery of service and appropriate planning and development for the future.

Mange the day to day service delivery of the Department
Ensure the Department complies with all local and national standards and remains externally accredited.
Ensure that the Department has sufficient capacity to cope with projected demands on the service, in order to achieve relevant quality and performance measures.
Ensure the Department has the appropriate workforce in order to deliver the required service and that there is a robust workforce plan.
Deliver the defined service with the agreed budget and ensure that appropriate investment is identified.
Applicants for the post will need to have an extensive knowledge of Microbiology laboratory and information systems, plus a developed understanding of the requirements for UKAS and Quality Management Systems; they will need to be enthusiastic, expected to appropriately contribute in all rotas, maintain and develop high standards of quality and enjoy working as part of a team.

Taking responsibility for policy and Service development, duties include supporting the team, providing operational management and professional leadership for staff in the department ensuring that the department meets its quality, activity and financial targets and in so doing contributes to the Group, Divisional and Trust objectives and targets.

You will develop strategies for service improvements for the department and will lead any change required to support the overall modernisation of services and the workforce.
