Biochemistry is organised within the Blood Sciences department which includes Haematology and Transfusion. The laboratory at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust is based in the Clinical Laboratory Medicine Building of the Royal Blackburn Hospital. The hospital was opened in 2006, with the laboratory being extended in 2008 following the merger of the Burnley and Blackburn hospitals in East Lancashire.
The main site is the Royal Blackburn Hospital, which is equipped with three Ortho Vitros 4600 analysers and 2 Siemens Centaur XPT analysers connected via an automated Thermo track; the track also comes with pre and post analytic modules. Additionally the department has TOSOH HbA1c analysers, Indiko analyser, Siemens Immulite Xpi,
Jasco HPLC, SEBIA Electrophoresis systems and Werfen Blood Gas analysers. The ESL laboratory at Burnley has a single Ortho Vitros FS 5.1and a Werfen Blood Gas analyser. Staff are expected to work at either site on a rostered basis.
The successful candidate will be a highly motivated, self-driven person and following training will participate in the out of hours service which is a shift system paid at Agenda for Change rates.
