Biochemistry has a vacancy for a band 6 Biomedical Scientist with specific interest in IT. Whilst maintaining your role as a BMS, the suitable candidate will be the departmental lead on all IT systems and projects and will work closely with the Laboratory Management Team and the IT department within Clinical Laboratory Services.

Clinical Biochemistry is a diagnostic laboratory. The laboratory is fully UKAS and HCPC/IBMS accredited. The Trust is a major Trauma Centre and has the largest Critical Care unit in Europe. It also undertakes the largest number of solid organ transplants in Europe and undertakes cutting edge surgeries placing a demand on the service. The department receives approximately 1,133,616 requests a year throughout Biochemistry. The department provides a twenty-for hour diagnostic and monitoring service for routine and urgent automated investigations. The department is currently changing its automation solution to Abbott Alinity with AMS IT. The department has Telepath as its current LIMS system. The successful candidate will help support the setup, testing and management of the IT throughout the department.

Currently the laboratory operates an 8am to 8pm working day (Mon - Fri) with rostered Saturday and Sunday mornings (time-off-in-lieu). A non-voluntary single discipline out-of-hours service (i.e. overnight, weekends and Bank Holidays) is in operation and is worked as part of the 37.5hrs. All shifts are compliant with Agenda for Change. The successful applicant will be expected to appropriately contribute in all rotas once trained. This may include weekend and night shifts where required.

The laboratory is located on Level minus 1 of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and provides a comprehensive pathology service to many Service Users including UHB Trust, Private Hospitals, General Practitioners and General Dental Practitioners.

We are looking to fill the post within Biochemistry with an individual who is experienced, self-motivated and an excellent communicator. You must be HCPC registered and hold the Post Registration Specialist Competency Portfolio or equivalent. Candidates who are working towards this will be considered if they can demonstrate evidence of experience of working with laboratory IT solutions and interfaces.

The suitable candidate will be involved in the refreshment project of the analytical platforms within the automation section which will begin in April 2019. In addition QEHB has recently merged with HGS (Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull hospitals) under the University Hospitals Birmingham NHSFT umbrella and this with the STP plan for Birmingham and Solihull will result in major changes and alignments of Pathology across Birmingham during 2019. As a result there will be several large IT projects within Biochemistry and the suitable candidate will lead the department along with the departmental management team and the Laboratory IT team.

Applicants for the post will need to have a specialist knowledge of Biochemistry with a special interest in automation and laboratory and information systems, plus a developed understanding of the requirements for UKAS and Quality Management Systems; they will need to be enthusiastic and able to maintain and develop high standards of quality and enjoy working as part of a team.

This is a full time permanent post (37.5 hrs per week) Monday – Friday. There may be a requirement to work outside of these hours for service delivery.
