Advanced Biomedical Scientist - Stem Cell

Employer: NHS - Blood & Transport (National)
Location: National
Salary: £33,222 to £43,041 pa
Type: Permanent
Expires: 11 Nov 2018

NHS Blood and Transplant is an integral part of the NHS. Operating a network of centers across England and North Wales, we collect around 2 million units of blood and tissues a year, converting them into safe and effective blood components, blood and tissue products for use in the treatments of patients. Our Stem Cell laboratories support over 1,500 haematopoetic stem cell transplants per year and, alongside our Advanced Therapy Units, are committed to developing and delivering novel treatments to save lives.

Applications are invited for the post of Advanced Specialist BMS (QC) within the Stem Cell and Immunotherapies (SCI) and Advanced Therapies Unit (ATU) at NHSBT, Bristol. The SCI unit selects, processes, and issues peripheral blood and bone marrow stem cells for patients requiring haemopoietic stem cell transplantation. Within ATU we work closely with academic and commercial teams to translate novel cellular therapies into the clinic. We collaborate with Clinical colleagues and participate in a number of clinical trials. Our partnership with transplant programmes and academic and commercial groups provides the opportunity to learn a great deal about the interaction between the NHSBT therapeutic services and the applied research and development environment.

This role is for an Advanced Specialist BMS to lead on Quality Control activities across SCI and ATU services. We’re looking for a HCPC registered Biomedical or Clinical Scientist with a relevant MSc or equivalent qualification. Experience working in an NHS or pharmaceutical environment in a quality focused role would be an advantage as would practical experience using flow cytometry and other cell biology techniques. Working within HTA and MHRA licensed laboratories requires diligence, discipline and an attention to detail. Candidates who possess such attributes are encouraged to apply. In this senior position you will represent the service at meetings and feedback laboratory and clinical information to the senior leadership team. Working with a number of different groups, your communication skills will be excellent and the ability to discuss and disseminate scientific information clearly and accurately is essential.

You will have a working knowledge of basic IT packages and quality management systems and have experience working unsupervised within the laboratory. A good team player, you’ll be capable of motivating both yourself and others as you tackle a wide variety of tasks.

The normal working hours for this position are 9.00-17.00 (37.5 hours/week) (with a degree of flexibility to suit the needs of the service (which may include occasional weekend work)).
