An opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified, HCPC registered candidate to join The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust Pathology Team as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist, working in the Microbiology Department based at Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield.

Applicants must have completed (or be near to completing) the IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Medical Microbiology and have substantial post registration experience. The post holder will be encouraged to undertake further qualifications to develop their specialist skills and knowledge and help support the Senior BMS staff in Microbiology.

Candidates will need to be enthusiastic, well-motivated and innovative, with good organisational and practical abilities supported by scientific knowledge, well developed interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to support individual and team working. The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust covers three sites: Pinderfields, Pontefract and Dewsbury Hospitals, with Microbiology being based at Pinderfields.

The department is accredited to ISO 15189:2012 (UKAS reference no. 9032) and is a modern, well-equipped laboratory offering a comprehensive Microbiology service currently processing in the region of 450,000 samples per annum. Equipment includes a Bruker MAldi-TOF, a BD Bactec FX, a BD Bactec MGIT 960, a DS2 ELISA analyser and an IQ200 Sprint urine analyser. The serology section of the laboratory includes a Diasorin Liaison XL and a Cobas e602 analyser.

The post holder will be encouraged to help develop the department enabling a cost effective and comprehensive service befitting a major provider of pathology services, being fully supported by the Pathology Management team reporting directly to the Chief Biomedical Scientist in Microbiology.

The post holder will be required to work flexibly depending on the needs of the service which may include any current out of hours/weekend rota and any future integrated shift system/rotation pattern which operates within the department (i.e. either day or night throughout seven days a week).
