Deputy Lead BMS - Histopathology

Employer: Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Trust
Location: Surrey
Salary: £42,110 to £50,196 pa inc. HCAS
Type: Permanent
Expires: 10 Jul 2018

The department of Histopathology within Berkshire & Surrey Pathology Services are seeking a motivated and highly skilled BMS to undertake the role of Deputy Lead Biomedical Scientist within the department.

Berkshire & Surrey Pathology Services is a joint venture of it’s host NHS Trusts which maintains its status as an NHS employer and as a public sector organisation, enshrining all the benefits to the population and workforce. It is based in a stable NHSI network and is an exemplar with Lord Carter’s reports and the NHSI vision.

Based in a recently refurbished and well equipped facility in Guildford, the department of Histopathology (Surrey) is a dynamic and forward thinking team of over 40 professional and support grade laboratory staff servicing the patients of The Royal Surrey County Hospital, Frimley Health NHS Trust and Ashford & St Peter's NHS Trust as well as primary care in the Surrey, Hampshire, Berkshire and Middlesex regions. The department, which currently operates 2 dissection and reporting satellites, processes 72000 Histopathology requests per annum which include complex resection specimens from the regional St Luke's cancer centre, also based in Guildford. The department has an extensive and recently upgraded OSNA service across 3 sites and provides an immunohistochemistry, immunoflouresence and in-situ hybridisation service totalling 64000 slides per annum. The department supports research projects and students from The University of Surrey and other institutions as well as placement students from a number of higher education institutes.

The role of Deputy Lead BMS is both operational and strategic with the department having recently launched a tender for upgrade of IHC, H&E and special staining equipment as well as the introduction of a specimen tracking system. There is a current upgrade process to the departmental LIMS taking place with estimated completion in Q2/3 2018 and discussions have started regarding further expansion and redevelopment of the laboratory space to bring all of Surrey Histology into the Guildford Hub. It is the intention of the department to be enabled for a future tender process for the introduction of Digital Pathology in 2019.

Applications are welcomed for the above position from candidates with significant experience of operating at a senior BMS or management level. Further education, as outlined in the person specification, will be an advantage. The successful candidate will have a proven record of team management, successful accreditation events and professional development and will be expected to continue and enhance the departmental Quality and Service Improvement Programme, working in close conjunction with the Lead BMS and General Manager. The appointed applicant will have a keen eye for detail and a strong vision of a modern hub laboratory and the ability to work collaboratively in a team under the direction of the Lead BMS. The appointed applicant will play an important role in the consolidation of the satellite services into the Guildford hub and hence critical evaluation and option appraisal will be a vital skill.

Informal enquiries are welcomed and a visit to the facilities are encouraged. Please contact James Woodland, Lead BMS on 01483 57 11 22 x2602 or [email protected]
