We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced individual to join our team as a Senior Biomedical Scientist within our UKAS ISO15189 accredited Microbiology department at the Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Working as an integral part of the laboratory management team you will on rotation be in charge of a sub section of the department helping to deliver a high level of service quality, both to the Trust and the community.

The Microbiology Department is part of the Pathology service providing a diagnostic Microbiology service to the Trust and GP surgeries. The hospital is situated on the edge of the Cotswolds in the bustling town of Swindon with easy access to the M4 corridor and excellent transport links to the open countryside. There is an on-site restaurant, crèche facilities and a choice of coffee/tea outlets. The laboratory has its own rest area just along the corridor from the department.

As the complexity of our workload continues to expand we are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Biomedical Scientist to act as a section lead with excellent interpersonal skills, a high degree of technical skills who is highly self-motivated to join the team. Working as an integral part of the laboratory senior management team you will be in technical charge of the Virology or Bacteriology service ensuring we continue to deliver a high quality service to patients and customers both within the Trust and the community.

The successful candidate will ensure a consistent and reliable service is provided and will manage a group of staff composed of Biomedical Scientists, Associate Practitioner and Biomedical Support Workers. You will be responsible for training and overseeing the training of staff and have responsibility for equipment use and maintenance. You will be expected to keep up to date with scientific and managerial development and support the Laboratory Manager in the provision of an efficient, expert, and cost effective service to appropriate standards including ISO15189.

It is essential that you are a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with Laboratory experience ideally in both Bacteriology and Virology disciplines. You should be able to demonstrate evidence of continuing professional development including technical, managerial and service development. The successful candidate will rotate through all areas of the Microbiology laboratory and participate on the weekend bacteriology rota.

The department operates a weekend and bank holiday service which you will be required to participate in alongside your working week. The post holder is also required to participate in the on-call (out-of-hours) Bacteriology service provision.
