Consultant in Microbiology

We have an exciting opportunity for a suitably qualified, enthusiastic and well-motivated infection specialist (CCT in Medical Microbiology or Microbiology / Infectious Disease) to join our department as an additional 5th Consultant Microbiologist.

Based at the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust (RDE) hospital, you will be joining our team of 4 microbiology consultants, 46 laboratory staff in technical and support grades, and 3 junior medical posts. Our emphasis is to provide a completely rounded infection service to the RDE and associated General Practises and Community Hospitals, that includes close liaison with medical and surgical teams (MDT with ITU, orthopaedics, renal medicine and ambulatory care and Joint Out-Patient clinics with orthopaedics, Diabetes and urology), a full clinical consult service including antimicrobial stewardship and sepsis ward rounds, and hospital and community infection control. The on-site laboratory provides the full range of diagnostic modalities: serology, molecular (including Point-Of-Care Testing) and bacteriology, and is working collaboratively with other pathology services in the region with the aim of developing a regional managed network. The new appointee will take a major role in Primary Care liaison and will work with General Practice to improve diagnostics and antimicrobial prescribing, but precise roles will be subject to internal agreement on appointment.

The Royal Devon and Exeter hospital is a 900 bed teaching hospital linked to the University of Exeter Medical School (UEMS). The Microbiology department has an excellent reputation for teaching (including Undergraduates at UEMS), training (Specialist Registrar rotation with Bristol, Clinical Scientist and Biomedical Scientist training laboratory) and we actively participate in research.

Applicants must be included on the GMC Specialist Register in Microbiology / Infectious Diseases, or within 6 months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT at the time of the interview. This is a full-time post but applications from those wanting to work part-time are also encouraged.
