Biomedical Science Courses
u MSc in Applied Biomedical Science (Part-time)
This course is for people working in the NHS or private healthcare sector. Students will attend lectures at Aston
University for 1 day a week in the first year and study modules based around Pathology, Molecular Pathology
and NHS Management. Research Methods will be studied by distance learning. In the second year, students
attend lectures for 1 day a week and have a choice of 4 specialist options: Infection Science, Clinical
Biochemistry, Haematology & Transfusion Science and Cellular Science. Students also complete a research
project based in their workplace. We are currently seeking IBMS accreditation for this course.
u MSc in Biomedical Science (Full-time)
This programme is comprised of core modules and a research project that provide detailed study and practical
experience in key areas of biomedical science and in the development of professional skills. The topics include
outlines and profiles of major human diseases, infection, immunology, cell culture techniques, research methods
and exploiting research. The supervised research project which lasts for four months is at the level expected for
the first year of PhD. Examples of projects include, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases, mechanisms
of immunity, and studies on key human diseases. This course starts in October, is one year full time and is
suitable for overseas students.
u Biomedical Science Top-up modules
The Biomedical Science top-up modules are for people who have a science degree but wish to pursue a
career as a Biomedical Scientist. Prior to registering for any top-up modules you need to contact the Institute of
Biomedical Science for advice about which modules you require. Their contact details are as follows: Institute of
Biomedical Science, 12 Coldbath Square, London EC1R 5HL, England, Telephone + 44 (0)20 7713 0214,
Fax + 44 (0)20 7837 9658, E-mail: mail@ibms.org.

u BSc in Biomedical Science
The 4-year sandwich degree in Biomedical Sciences is the optimum route for students wishing to practice as
HPC registered Biomedical Scientists following graduation. This option comprises an education and training
programme which allows the student to undertake a clinical placement (between the second and final years) in a
CPA accredited hospital laboratory. The clinical placement in the approved laboratory allows students to
complete the IBMS training and registration portfolio in the third year of the degree course. By undertaking the
4-year sandwich degree, graduates become eligible to apply to the HPC for registration as Biomedical Scientists
when they receive their University degree. The 3-year full-time degree in Biomedical Science without a clinical
placement may offer a more favourable route to graduation for those students who wish to study Biomedical
Science but do not necessarily wish to practice as HPC registered Biomedical Scientists following graduation,
e.g. for those graduates wishing to work in other health-related industries such as the pharmaceutical industry.
